Supporting Detox Pathways: A Guide to Liver & Colon Reset
This past weekend, Michael and I entered a space of deep renewal and restoration.
We fully unplugged from phones and the internet, allowing the mind to quiet and the nervous system to reset. At the same time, we completed a liver cleanse protocol, following a week of preparation and intentional dietary support.
To deepen the experience, we spent these days immersed in nature among the ancient Sequoias, staying in a cozy cabin beside a flowing river. The combination of silence, forest medicine, water, and cleansing created a powerful container for clarity, rest, and inner spaciousness as we prepare for a new season ahead.
One of the reasons I feel so devoted to healing work is simple: when we take time to restore ourselves, we are able to show up more fully for others. I return from this experience feeling refreshed, grounded, and inspired to continue supporting others on their wellness journey.
Why We Chose to Do a Liver Cleanse
We decided to explore the liver cleanse inspired by the work of Andreas Moritz, author of The Amazing Liver and Gallbladder Flush, who describes how congestion may accumulate in the liver and biliary system over time, potentially affecting digestion and overall vitality.
For us, this was not about extremes, but about curiosity, prevention, and deepening our understanding of digestive health and detoxification. After years of hearing holistic practitioners emphasize the importance of liver function, we felt called to experience the process directly. Michael did it the forth time, I did it the second time with great results.
It became an opportunity not only to learn, but to listen more closely to the body itself.
What the Cleanse Involves
The protocol requires preparation and commitment. It includes a week of dietary adjustments, the use of malic acid to soften accumulated stones, Epsom salts to support relaxation of the bile ducts, and a mixture of olive oil and grapefruit juice to support the flushing process.
We also chose to support the process with colon hydrotherapy before and after the cleanse, which many practitioners recommend to ensure proper elimination pathways.
If you are interested in this protocol, I strongly encourage you to read Andreas Moritz’s book in full and research it thoroughly before considering it.
Our Experience
Once the cleanse was complete, we felt as though my digestive system had been reset.
The process required energy, patience, and rest, yet it also offered something far beyond a physical outcome. Alongside the physical release, we spent time praying, meditating, journaling, and reflecting on what I was ready to let go of—physically, emotionally, and energetically.
Michael as a Chi Nei Tsang practitioner, and through his work he supports others in understanding the deep connection between the abdomen, emotional processing, and overall vitality. The abdomen is often referred to as the “second brain,” and in his practice he observes how emotions, stress, and unprocessed experiences can be held within the body.
In a parallel, through my work in women’s health and holistic wellness, I witness how the body—especially the feminine system—reflects emotional states, cyclical rhythms, and lived experiences. Together, these perspectives offer a wider understanding of how physical and emotional layers intertwine.
During the cleanse, we felt layers of stagnation moving—not only physically, but also emotionally. Fear, sadness, worry, and old tension surfaced, each one asking to be acknowledged before dissolving.
Whether these experiences are understood as physiological, emotional, spiritual, or a combination of all three, the process became a profound opportunity for presence, listening, and inner awareness.
Colon Hydrotherapy Support
Before this experience, we felt some nervousness around colon hydrotherapy. However, we came to see it as an important supportive step in both preparation and recovery.
We had a very positive experience with Optimal Health & Wellness - Colonics & Detox and we are grateful for her professionalism, care, and guidance throughout the process.
The pre-cleanse session helped prepare the elimination pathways, while the post-cleanse session supported the release process afterward.
Why Consider a Liver & Gallbladder Cleanse?
Many traditional and holistic systems view the liver as a central organ for metabolism, digestion, and internal balance. It plays a key role in processing nutrients, hormones, and environmental compounds, while also producing bile to support digestion.
Supporters of liver cleansing suggest that, when approached carefully and intentionally, it may help people reconnect with their digestion, energy levels, and overall lifestyle habits.
While scientific research on specific “liver flush” protocols remains limited, many people report subjective experiences such as increased clarity, lighter digestion, and renewed motivation toward health.
Who May Benefit?
People who are generally healthy and curious about digestive wellness or lifestyle resets may explore liver-supportive practices.
Common reasons people feel drawn to it include:
• Sluggish or heavy digestion
• Bloating or discomfort after meals
• Low energy or fatigue
• Feeling “stuck” or congested
• Desire to reset habits and nutrition
• Interest in deeper digestive awareness
In our own experience, the most meaningful effects were not only physical, but also emotional and spiritual. The process invited us to slow down, become more mindful, and reconnect with our bodies in a deeper way.
Important Safety Considerations
A liver cleanse is not appropriate for everyone.
It should be avoided or approached only with professional guidance if you:
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding
• Have liver disease or significant liver impairment
• Have gallbladder disease or known complications with gallstones
• Have bile duct obstruction
• Have kidney disease or serious digestive disorders
• Are recovering from surgery or serious illness
• Have any condition affected by fasting, supplements, or detox protocols
If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, it is essential to consult a qualified healthcare provider before attempting any cleanse protocol.
A Note on Colon Support
One of the key insights from this experience was the importance of supporting elimination pathways before and after the cleanse.
Many practitioners emphasize that the colon should be functioning well so that bile and waste materials can move efficiently through the system.
For this reason, we chose to include colon hydrotherapy both before and after the process.
This may not be suitable for everyone, although is highly recommended to no have any gallstones in the colon because they can create more problems as you would never done the cleanse before and other gentle, physician-approved methods of supporting regular elimination can also be used.
Final Reflections
More than anything, this experience reminded us of the intelligence of the human body.
Stepping away from technology, immersing ourselves in the forest, listening to the river, walking among the Sequoias, and dedicating time to intentional cleansing created a spaciousness that is rarely found in everyday life.
I leave this experience feeling deeply grateful—for our health, for Michael walking this journey with me, for the teachers who introduced this work, and for the quiet intelligence of the organs that support us every day.
Sometimes healing is not about adding more. It is about creating space, listening deeply, and allowing the body to do what it already knows how to do.
